Since many friends, family members and community folks have asked me for my fabric face mask pattern, here it is, my gift to you. I started with the craft passion mask, but tweaked the fit in the chin area and added seam allowances, etc.
Disclaimer: THIS IS NOT A MEDICAL GRADE MASK, and my patterns are a little sloppy.
Includes a smaller “woman-sized” mask, and a larger “man-sized” mask.
Please be safe.
Supplies Needed:
tightly woven 100% cotton fabric
1/8” or 1/4” braided elastic
Cutting instructions:
For mask with pocket (as shown)
Cut 2 outside fabric
Cut 2 interlining fabric (if 3 ply mask is desired)
Cut 2 pocket/lining
Sewing instructions:
Outside fabric: put right sides of the fabric together, sew center seam with 1/4” seam allowance (if doing 3 ply, place both on top and sandwich the interlining pieces in this seam) Press the seam allowance to one side and topstitch down the seam allowance, 1/16” away from seam.
Repeat with lining pieces.
Finish straight side edge of lining (overlock, stitch and pink, or zig zag works) and hem sides 1/2”
Put the lining and outside together, with the right sides facing each other, matching the center front seams.
Sew top and bottom edges with 1/4” seam allowance
Clip the curves and turn the mask right side out.
Press.
Topstitch 1/8” away from the top and bottom edge, (hemming the raw top and bottom edges of the outside fabric extension 1/4”
Finish the raw sides of the outside fabric, then fold in 5/8” to kiss the edge of the pocket. Stitch 1/2” from the fold, creating a casing.
Thread a piece of elastic through the casing, hold the mask in place and measure the desired length on your own face to see what is most comfortable ( for me, I cut 7 1/2” and finish with a 7” loop)
Sew the edges of the elastic securely into a loop , and then slide the cut/sewn part of the loop into the casing.
Take care of yourself, and remember, the safest thing you can do for everyone is STAY HOME.
